Mind blowing sword fights and captivating personalities makes this a wonderful film to capture. Although not as classically wrapped as 1993's Disney version, this enthralling adventure will take you on a ride that only your inner old cynic will have the gull to critique. 8/10 for you'd have to be soulless to criticize young Logan Lerman's fierce-fully committed performance as the novice embodiment of the greatest Musketeer that ever was, d'Artagnan. I truly believed he actually had the skill to take on 10 of the cardinal's guards without breaking a sweat at 15.
The only downfall of the film is that it only has two major sword fights, when there should be at least 5, throwing the film out of whack. However, the film is set up as, only, the first story of an unfinished tale. Hence, you can look forward that this is only the beginning of an impressive lore, with a greater depth, that will have your inner child wishing we were back in 1625, ready to die for the things we love and believe in. Super 8
Stunning attempt to honor classic family storytelling in the vain of E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind... But, arguably, devastatingly bland and simple to satisfy today's de-synthesized audiences. 6/10 for a respectable storyline and enjoyable acting from the young newcomers. The singular Elle Fanning effortlessly proves she's one of the most captivating actresses of her generation. (It's cute how her biggest dream is to be in a movie with her big sister.)
People don't seem to realize how significant Super 8 film making is in the history of the most prominent directors of today. It's a nostalgic guilty pleasure to pay homage to their youth, and the origin moments which made them who they are today. Even better when they can center it around the syfy backdrop they all aspired to film when they were just young dreamers with only a few friends to play along with them.
Spielberg counsels Abrams in what is considered to be his first "real" movie. (It's good to have the most revered living director of our generation as your mentor.) The picture, in any case, is an iconic milestone to the imaginative facility of J.J. Abrams's long lasting influence in cinema.
